Still, the whole “two men, a server, and a dream” looks good when you see what InMotion is doing today. Today, they’ve grown to more than300 employees and have offices in three separate locations.

InMotion hosting has a lot of things going for it. You’ll find that it is one of the best hosting providers available when it comes to scalability.
90-Day Money-Back Guarantee
InMosting Shared Hosting plans come with a generous 90-day money-back guarantee. This is above the standard thirty days offered by most other hosting companies.
It’s important to note that not all services come with this guarantee. Most of the “add-on” services we will address later do not come with a money-back offer.
InMotion Hosting offers per month packages that literally cannot come with this offer. Also, the dedicated hosting options only come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Free Domain (or Domain Transfer)
Like most providers, InMotion offers a free domain or domain transfer for new users. These free domains are part of all plans like the launch plan, pro plan, or WordPress hosting plans.
You might think that a free domain is neat, but it is pretty standard among website hosting providers. Despite it being free, you will still need to pay for domain security separately.
Domain security locks your domain name behind a password, ensuring nobody can buy it from under you. This can be important if someone buys the domain out from under you, often charging large sums of money for you to get it back.
Many Hosting Types
InMotion offers a considerable amount of hosting types. Here is a list of them:
- Dedicated hosting (including “bare metal”)
- VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting
- Shared Hosting Plans
- Reseller plans
- eCommerce hosting ( under the standard hosting packages)
- cPanel hosting
- Private cloud hosting
InMotion hosting has ample storage that makes it a reliable web hosting company for eCommerce websites.
Their private cloud core technology is called Flex Metal Cloud IaaS. These servers are powered by CentOS, a community-driven open-source software used in servers.
In lamens terms, this means the software behind the cloud is accessible for developers. That means if you have tech support already on staff, they can manage servers for you. Otherwise, stick to managed dedicated servers.
With it being a “private cloud,” only you and your administrators have access to your interface. This is not uncommon for a hosting service, as most of them won’t open up your dashboard and websites for everyone.
Website Builder (both DIY and Professional)
Instead of having an internal website builder, InMotion supports BoldGrid, a beginner-friendly website builder.
However, you would more likely call it a “theme selector,” as it just gives you a series of WordPress themes and some optional features. Other web hosts typically do the same, but the largest ones have better-integrated building software.
InMotion also allows you to hire professionals to create a one-page website for you. This appears as a $249 add-on as you hit the end of the checkout process.
QuickStarter is great if you want to get off the ground running. But the QuickStarter add-on does not have the same 90-day money-back guarantee. Instead, this purchase is final.
If you know the cost of an entirely custom website, the price isn’t terrible with the two-day turnaround time. But unless you want a WordPress website and need it done tomorrow, this service isn’t worth the cost.
SSD Storage (With Great Web Space)
Another neat part of InMotion Hosting is its available web space and data transfer limits. While the Lite plan has a measly 10GB, the next level plan jumps to 50GB. In all cases, you have unlimited bandwidth, but the SSD storage can be a game-changer for eCommerce websites.
It’s a surprising amount of space for InMotion shared hosting plans, as some hosting companies are a bit skimpier. Typically, this is done to upsell upgraded plans to you.
Other less-known features include Softaculous. Softaculous is an auto-installer for CPanel that helps you manage lines of PHP code. It costs an additional $5 per month for purchase.
Servers also have remote KVM access. KVM lets you plug your keyboard and mouse into a physical port that enables you to access your dedicated server. This feature is better for web administrators.
Cons
When looking at this InMotion Hosting review, it’s easy to get focused on the good stuff. However, InMotion has some issues it needs to deal with:
Spammy Website with Several Upsells
Looking at the InMotion Web Hosting Site is a bit of a visual tour de force. Those first looking at the site might be intimidated by the sheer amount of information. You even get a popup or two.
The spam is a bit disappointing, as this InMotion hosting review has clearly shown some excellent features. But users need to be given more opportunities to look around before getting the “buy now text.”
Once you get to the checkout, you get slammed with three additional Upsells, some of them being added to the cart right away.
These include the following:
- The Website Creator at $180 for a one-year subscription
- The backup manager at $72 over three years
- A dedicated IP for $72 for one year
- The QuickStarter website builder package for $249
Some of these are not mentioned until you get to checkout. Other hosting reviews don’t seem to mention this much, but InMotion needs to calm down a bit. Less spam typically leads to a better experience.
No Free Trial
Web hosting companies have a terrible habit of not allowing you to look at the dashboard without paying for the service. Instead, the free trial is in the form of a money-back offer, which isn’t terrible.
If you already have a budget for a more prominent website in mind, this isn’t terrible. However, if you are a small company that needs to create a site with a limited budget, that’s a problem.
To address this limitation, they do have a series of YouTube tutorials, but looking at your dashboard and navigating through it will help you determine if it is a good fit. This isn’t a unique issue for InMotion Hosting, as several web hosts have this problem.
No Built-In Staging
Staging is the process of creating a test website that allows you to look at site changes before releasing them. For a company needing a professional image, these changes are a must-have. This lack of support is a significant oversight.
To address this limitation, WordPress hosting allows you to perform edits and create drafts. But as we know, with some WordPress plugins or themes, they don’t always like to get along. So you won’t be able to see those results until the website is published.
No Support for Windows Servers
Users who prefer Linux servers will find no trouble integrating. However, customers who love Windows Servers won’t find any love here. As another web host that doesn’t support Windows, there are limited integrations with their services.
Compared to other major providers like GoDaddy, this can lead to potentially lost customers. However, support for cPanel and Linux is often more common among web servers.
With higher-tier payment plans, you can install a custom OS on your server in one of their data centers. We will revisit that later in this article.
Performance Tests
To check on InMotion’s speed potential, we ran three tests using these websites:
- Pingdom
- GTMetrix
- Web.dev
All three websites allow us to test speed. This gives us a good cross-section to know about the reliability of these tests. We will also be looking at uptime statistics.
Our tests run on a randomly selected website confirmed to host with InMotion, foodinsight.org.
InMotion Speed Tests
Our first test uses Pingdom, which immediately showed promising results on the page load time. A 2 MB page loading in one second is a pretty impressive response time:
Pingdom’s tests come from a California location, which happens to be where InMotion’s servers are located. So this might explain why we see an incredibly high speed here.
When we compare this to GTMetrix, load times are reduced to about 2.7 seconds. However, you still see the first large content piece within one second.
Finally, our Web.dev test revealed loading speeds closer to four seconds, with the first contentful paint at two seconds.
Knowing that inMotion has its data servers in Ashburn, VA, Los Angeles, CA, and Washington, DC, they firmly cover the east and west coasts. With this in mind, website speeds in the US average at about 2.7 seconds between our three tests.
These speeds assume the shared hosting plan, which puts it on par with some of our other tests with SiteGround and Bluehost.
However, we imagine that international companies will find it difficult to justify getting a website here. Given they only have servers in the United States, it isn’t recommended for people in other countries.
InMotion Hosting’s Uptime – Is It Reliable?
Much like other website hosting services, InMotion guarantees 99.9% uptime. This is common for other hosting services like those below:
These uptime guarantees are outstanding when determining company confidence. Suppose, if you were to have your website down due to a server-side error. In that case, InMotion is likely to provide some credit for the failure.
InMotion also allows a signed service level agreement (SLA) that guarantees 99.99% hosting uptime although the actual uptime based on tests is about 99.95%, which is still very good. SLAs provide you with more leverage in the event your site goes down more than .01% of the time, but only if you pay for their highest shared hosting tier.

Security Features of InMotion
InMotion offers a variety of security features that keep it competitive with other web hosts. Those security features include the following:

Both malware scanning and DDoS protection make this host a unique offering when it comes to security support. Let’s explore what these features mean below:
Free 2048-Bit Encrypted SSL
All InMotion plans come with a free SSL (secure socket layer) with 2048-bit encryption. Secure Socket Layer protection is standard among most other website offerings but is still solid as a beginning offer.
The 2048-bit encryption is adequate protection for now. However, InMotion hosting will need to upgrade this encryption style by 2030. By this time, 2048-bit keys will be easily cracked by hackers.
Most likely, InMotion hasn’t upgraded to the next level (4096-bit keys) due to performance. Most hosting service providers are in the same boat.
Malware Scanning and DDoS Protection
InMotion’s malware scanning and protection features scan your website daily for malware. This feature also comes will all available inMotion plans.
It is less common for a feature like this to come with lower-level plans. So this website hosting service has better security service on lesser pricing plans than most other providers.
InMotoin also offers DDoS protection using Coreo. DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service, which involves a targeted attack that prevents businesses from providing services.
InMotion claims a unique server structure using Coreo, a company that specializes in DDoS protection.
InMotion Hosting’s servers also include a Cisco ASA 5506 Firewall. These firewalls are considered some of the more advanced ones on the market.
These security features are great if you have a smaller website you still believe deserves good protection.
Automatic Backups
While most other providers in the web hosting industry offer backups. InMotion is no different and offers this service for customers under their lite plan as well.
However, you would need to pay extra if you would like automatic backups. The InMotion backup manager costs $72 for three years. It isn’t included with their lite plan:
InMotion Customer Support: Are They Reliable?
InMotion offers the following customer support services:
- 24/7 phone support
- Email support
- 24/7 live chat
- An online support center
- 24/7 website monitoring with a support ticket system
- Educational resources
- Community support forums
I reached out to them using the live chat feature, which you can find in a red text bubble in the bottom-right of most screens.
Dan, a customer support specialist from their sales team, responded in a matter of seconds. Dan was very matter-of-fact and answered the question promptly:
As someone who has worked in customer support before, I don’t expect everyone to be bubbly. But I do admit that my experience reaching out to SiteGround was better and solution-oriented.
As a result, it was an average customer interaction. But one interaction isn’t enough to get a blanket idea of InMotion hosting’s customer service skills.
Trustpilot: InMotion Hosting Review from Users
Trustpilot shares that InMotion has an average review of 3.6 stars. This makes InMotion slightly above average, which isn’t ultimately ideal.
Unfortunately for this company, the first review that jumps off the page is one star:
Lost My Files
“I registered my site: masspal.com with Inmotion hosting. They lost my files after I have been using them and paying for them for years. I made many attempts to solve the problem. They were not interested. They refused to replace them. I do not recommend them. Worst company ever. Stay away!”
The first review indicates that InMotion lost their files, stating that their customer support team was “not interested” in recovering those files. Others share a more positive customer experience:

“Their price is one of the lowest I know and there was no sudden increase after initial contract expired. I also like the fact that their Customer Support has helped me lately on multiple occasions.”
It’s common to see people describe enjoying the “American-based” customer service as well. So this website host is very much about hiring local people. Some are a bit more “meh” about the customer experience.
Scripted Customer Service
“I had two script based conversations with their help desk. On both occasions their response was excellent. However I thought these conversations were confidential but the scripts were given to the person I was checking on.”
Some users suspect InMotion uses scripting, meaning that their interactions aren’t genuine. But this is often done to expedite the process.
You’ll find that it is common for InMotion to respond to many user reviews directly. Its Trustpilot page is more active than most hosts, making them pretty responsive.
But reputation management needs to be a high priority when you have a customer experience that’s 60% five-stars and 33% one-star.
Is InMotion Easy To Use?
Ease of use is crucial. After all, you don’t want to look at an ugly dashboard for the next one to three years. So how does their dashboard stack up when looking up your websites?
InMotion’s Account Management Panel (AMP)
Looking at InMotion’s dashboard, you’ll see that most of their content is right up front. Because you will either find yourself working with cPanel or WordPress, those already comfortable with these will find something there.
If you manage multiple websites, all of them are located on a single page. Because of this, you’ll end up doing a lot of scrolling if you resell InMotion Hosting plans. Excessive scrolling doesn’t make this platform difficult, but it does create an arduous experience.
So it isn’t the best website management dashboard on the block, but it certainly can use some improvements.

First, it’s important to note that there are no free trials and no demo packages. This isn’t uncommon for hosts but is unusual for companies that offer website building services. This is why InMotion’s website builder is WordPress.

To make this an in depth InMotion hosting review, I wanted to find the renewal rates but couldn’t get the exact information. Based on other customer experiences, renewal rates for InMotion are definitely higher.
Also, you are only allowed to pay monthly for their highest-level plan. These prices are comparable to those offered by sites like BlueHost.

- WP-2000s: $6.99/mo at 2-years or $7.99/mo for one-year.
- WP-3000s: $12.99/mo at 2-years or $13.99/mo for one-year.
- WP-4000s: $19.99/mo at 2-years or $22.99/mo for one-year.
WordPress hosting plans are more expensive because they include access to WordPress’s plugins and features.
The WP-1000s plan has 50GB of storage, unlimited email and bandwidth, and advanced caching features.
WP-2000s comes with double the storage and Jetpack Personal, which includes more than 100 WordPress themes to customize your website. It is seen as the best value.
WP-3000s includes 150GB of storage and everything else mentioned above. It also has a dedicated Opcode cache pool that stores compiled PHP code in the memory. Much like other features, it is meant to improve website response time.
WP-4000s has 200GB of storage and a dedicated IP. It also comes with everything previously mentioned and much more.
VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting Pricing and Plans
VPS hosting is sorted by RAM levels from two to eight gigabytes. Higher RAM amounts result in faster speeds. Pricing levels are sorted into one month, six months, one year, two years, and three-year tiers. The monthly cost of those tiers will be below.

Alternatives to InMotion Hosting
If you don’t like InMotion Hosting, here are three web hosting companies you should definitely consider going with.
• WP Engine: Compared to InMotion Hosting, their hosting plan options are built more for those who are needing guidance. This web hosting option was made for beginners.
WPEngine has specific plans for eCommerce, making them more suitable on that front as well. However, the local storage availability behind WPEngine makes them more expensive for more significant sites.
WPEngine’s focus on design makes them a weaker hosting option.
• WPX Hosting: WPX hosting is excellent at creating small, fast, and secure websites. This company only works in WordPress hosting and domains, making them incredibly limited. But they are good at producing numerous small sites.
Their problem comes from the lack of unlimited bandwidth. InMotion Hosting offers unlimited bandwidth from the beginning. As a result, their second-tier (which has much more reasonable pricing) holds more web storage than WPX’s largest available tier.
However, WPX is great if you need to make a series of small, fast sites. WPX’s Content Delivery Network (CDN) is great.
• A2 Hosting: In a competition for overwhelming websites, A2 Hosting gives InMotion a run for its money. A2 offers just as many services, and they want you to know about it.
Their initial discounts are also far deeper than InMotion Hostings, offering cuts as low as 72% off. However, much of their website is written like a limitless sales funnel.
A2 is so full of buzzwords that you might end up vibrating just from looking at the site too long. However, they do have a higher customer rating on Trustpilot.

Yes, InMotion supports cPanel and provides ample resources on applying cPanel’s features to your website. To access cPanel, you first need to log in at the Account Management Panel (AMP).
